A fanfic trilogy by Catherine Jackson that appeared in
The Eye Shield fanzine. Along with
Adventure Time, it was the first
Knightmare fanfic to be published outside of
The Quest.
The author received a
free copy of
Lord Fear’s Domain as a reward for sending in the first story,
The Dragon Queen, which was printed in
TES Issue 1 (December 1995) and
Issue 2 (March 1996). In it,
Merlin discovers that
Lord Fear has assembled a whole army of dragons at
Mount Fear, and sends
Treguard to
Level 3 in search of the legendary Dragon Queen, a sorceress who is rumoured to have impressive dragon-taming skills. A drawing of her magical symbol was the first contribution to the fanzine's Art Desk page.
Issue 3 (June 1996) featured the sequel,
The Dragon Queen Returns. The story sees Treguard once again join forces with the Dragon Queen to thwart the plans of Lord Fear and
Aesandre, who have gained control of an enchanted being called the Crystal Knight. The setting for the climactic scene, the Crystal Caverns, shares its name with a location in Lord Fear's Domain where
Greystagg can be found.
Almost a decade later, the third and final instalment was published in
Issue 35 and
Issue 36 (September & November 2005), after Catherine wrote in to say she had been thinking of writing another Dragon Queen story and received a positive response from editor
Jake Collins. Entitled
The Dragon Queen's Last Stand, it sees Lord Fear and
Maldame attempting to find
Smirkenorff's secret nest site to prevent the dragon from breeding, while allies of the Powers That Be
unite to stop the evil pair.
